QipCam In-Line System for thermal seal inspection

The QipCam in-line inspection system uses advanced thermal imaging technology to monitor packaging seal quality in real time. High-definition thermal camera images are captured immediately after the sealing process and analysed using sophisticated software. This highly accurate thermal inspection technology provides exceptionally clear insight into seal quality abnormalities and production inconsistencies. Because the analysis takes place directly during production, defects are detected immediately, fully in-line and in real time. The QipCam system is compatible with all types of laminate materials, including printed and unprinted laminates, with or without aluminium.

What is thermal seal inspection?

Thermal seal inspection is a non-destructive quality control method used to analyse the integrity and consistency of heat-sealed packaging. During the sealing process, heat and pressure create a thermal pattern within the packaging material. By capturing and analysing this thermal signature with infrared technology, even the smallest seal defects, contamination or pressure variations can be detected. Unlike conventional vision inspection systems, thermal seal inspection can identify internal sealing inconsistencies that are invisible to the naked eye. This makes the technology particularly suitable for high-speed packaging environments where reliable seal integrity is essential for product quality, shelf life and leak prevention.

How the QipCam system creates thermal seal images

Thermal images of the seal created by packaging machines or welding equipment provide valuable insights for production optimisation and quality control. The system can also be used for in-line wall thickness control on blow moulding equipment. As a result, every individual package is tested for seal integrity and impermeability, regardless of production speed.

The QipCam system consists of three units

  1. High-performance infrared camera

Captures both approved reference seals and all variations in seal quality for accurate comparison and defect detection.

  1. Control PC
  • IP65 stainless steel enclosure
  • Multiple I/O connections for reject systems
  1. QipCam software

Advanced analysis of thermal image pixels received from the camera, translated into a unique seal quality fingerprint.

QipCam working principle

The QipCam system performs a complete seal inspection within a fraction of a second. When the seal quality meets the predefined standards, the package continues through the production line. If a defect is detected, the package is automatically removed by a reject unit, typically supplied by one of our industrial partners. The system can be stopped and restarted at any time, allowing operators to interact with the production process whenever necessary. No special operator actions are required during normal operation. Before production begins, the QipCam system automatically records approximately 30 to 50 approved seals to generate a reference seal profile. This calibration process only needs to be completed once and is stored within the system for future production runs. During production, every newly produced seal is continuously compared with this reference profile to detect deviations and defects in real time.
